Another Bad A** Women's Event

On March 5th 2013 Iris Magazine of the U.Va.'s Women's Center hosted a luncheon discussion – the topic: "Bada** Women in Literature."  Held at U.Va. OpenGrounds, the program featured three great U.Va. faculty members who spoke to us about their favorite female literary writers and why they thought their picks deserved the title of bada**.

The Women of the White House

Presidents' Day has come and left again for another year. Celebrating the birthday of George Washington, Presidents' Day gives us a chance to show our appreciation to the 44 men who have led this country since its inception. Of all the articles and books written about these influential men how many take the time to remember the women who have graced the hallways of the White House? We all know that 'behind every great man there is a greater woman,' so here is a small tribute to some of the iconic women who have left their mark as First Lady.

Bad A** Woman of the Week: Catherine White

This is National Girls and Women in Sports week, culminating in an event on Sunday to honor Lauren Purdue, so we thought we'd have a sporty BAWW. We did not have to look far to find one; Catherine White was an immediate obvious choice. Recently made a captain of the women's track team, White, enjoying her last season as a graduate student in kinesiology here at U.Va, has a long and decorated history in track.

Bad A** Woman of the Week: Anna Boynton

Anna Boynton - All Girls Dance There are so many different kinds of bada** women because, let’s face it, women are awesome. Our next BAWW happens to be a close friend of mine, Ms. Anna Boynton, but it will become clear when I describe her achievements that most anyone would agree she is bada**.

Iris at the Inauguration

The day started early. My friend Leah had graciously offered the use of her apartment in the District so Sara, Lauren, and I would not have to worry about getting into the busy capital the morning of the Inauguration.  However this meant that six people were crammed into a space usually reserved for two.

Embracing "The Female Conscience": Iris Teams Up with VQR

Wednesday, February 6th, Iris and VQR team up to host a "Celebration of the Female Conscience" at OpenGrounds (next to the Women's Center).

Bad A** Woman of the Week: Janet Napolitano

There are many recipes for being a bada** woman. This is one that we particularly admire: Graduate from Santa Clara University with a Truman Scholarship as their first female valedictorian. Get your JD from the University of Virginia School of Law (WAHOOWA!). Serve as a clerk for the honorable Judge Mary Schroeder on the U.S Court of Appeals. Be the attorney general and then governor of Arizona. Become the third Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Bodies We Want: Female Athletes at U.Va

Women between the ages of 18-21 are known to have the worst body image problems. But what about female athletes? ESPN claims that these are women who are supposed to have the "best" bodies that most females idolize. We wanted to hear what the athletes had to say about their changing bodies. How do they feel bench-pressing more weight than their male friends and boyfriends? How do they feel having to stretch out their shirts to fit over their muscles? How do they feel when other girls call them intimidating?

Do they think it is worth it?
