The Crows

The Crows

I left the windows open
And let the crows take your things,
So that the world may shine and shimmer
With your beauty,
So that the crows may build a nest
And you'll be of some use to this world.

You shooed the crows away
Whenever they flew by.
To you they were scavengers,
While I saw dark beasts
Born from the folds of the night.

And to you their nests,
Shining with silver tinsel
And woven with stolen string,
Were abominations
Lacking in symmetry,
While I admired their ability
To create beauty out of nothing.

In your skilled hands
You smashed their eggs,
Letting the yolks run
In soft sunlight streams,
Telling me not to cry
As if the destruction of a life
Meant nothing to you.

I was a fool
To think
You'd make me beautiful.
I was a fool
To think
I loved you.

I wish I had left the windows open
And let the crows devour you.
