Did You Know?: A Letter from the Editor

Here at Iris, we strive to be a provocative magazine for thinking young women. That means we want to make you think, and give you things to think about. Here are some things you might not know:

There is a very large gender disparity when it comes to who is utilizing study abroad resources in college. And it might not be what you think it is.

For those of use who do get to go abroad: it can be both terrifying, dangerous, empowering, and revelatory all at the same time.

Carla Williams was recently named UVA’s Director of Athletics. She is the first female African-American athletics director at a Power Five conference institution, and only the fifth female athletics director at this level ever.

You may have never heard her name, but Dean Rachel Most works tirelessly behind the scenes to make your academic life go smoothly.

In the wake of sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein, countless brave women, (and men and nonbinary people) have been sharing their stories of sexual harassment and assault using the hashtag #MeToo.

Time Magazine didn’t have their first female editor-in-chief until 2013. And she’s freaking awesome.
