Dearest Reader,
Hello! We took a much needed week off thanks to Spring Break, but we’re back and better than ever with the latest issue of Iris, fresh off the press! This cycle, our writers venture deep into the unknown and chart a course across uncharted waters, where they’ve challenged themselves to write outside of their comfort zone. From a pop culture analysis on Gen Z’s love of Snoopy, to a few new fiction pieces, you’ll find fresh writing that takes you someplace new.
Carley starts us off with her analysis of Snoopy, the classic Peanuts beagle turned pop culture icon. In “I ❤️ Snoopy and you probably do too” — she asks the question, why has Snoopy become so popular with Gen-Z and why now?
In “New Chapters, But What About Our Old Hobbies?” Lindsey Smith follows up with an essay about our hobbies, reflecting on why the gap between professional and amateur is so hard to fill. But maybe the answer might be closer than we think.
With an earnest defense of her favorite movie, the Before Sunrise Trilogy in, “Showing Someone Your Favorite Movie” Grace writes about the terrifying, thrilling, and sometimes awkward experience of sharing a movie you love with the other people in your life.
Jackie Bond and Simone Minor both took a leap and wrote fiction this cycle. In “Thyroid Case Study” Simone delves into the patient perspective and not just the diagnosis. In Jackie's piece, “The Perfect Man” she writes about a first date gone horribly wrong in Washington, D.C.
With Audre Lorde in mind, Bailey’s piece, “Dangerous Woman” wonders about how to redefine the erotic — a perfect read as we approach the final week of Women’s History Month.
Thank you again to the fantastic artist team — Judy Zhao, Seble Alemu and Daphenie Joseph!! Huge shout out to the Social Media and Communications teams for working with us and keeping the wheels turning in our editorial labor of love! Happy Reading!
See you next time,
