Ruby's Reveries

There once was a beautiful girl who lived mostly in her head. She wasn’t beautiful for any notable extrinsic features. She looked quite normal but radiated a natural charm. Her name was Ruby.

The expansive powers of her mind were fantastical, surpassing the average daydreams experienced by those around her. She imagined hopping along stones that traced a rapidly flowing river of fancy, all while sitting on a crowded school bus that smelt of leather and must. She skipped rocks in the great pool of magic as she jumped from one dream to the next. All of her fantasies rushed to the edge of her consciousness and collected at the bottom of a beautiful waterfall.

Tinkering with the current reality of the world was her favorite thing to do.

Replaying moments of mundane serenity, Ruby's mind was always flooding with a sense of purpose. She loved to envision what could come next. Tinkering with the current reality of the world was her favorite thing to do. Maybe she had a series of boring classes to attend, one after the other, but it didn’t matter because she could shape any scene into an alluring space of deep thought and consideration.

Learning the ABC’s in her quaint kindergarten class, she would ask, “What do these words mean?” and build a big beautiful nest to house the deafening musings of life within her mind, thoughts constantly chirping and fluttering about. She yearned to understand the greater purpose of the universe.

Ruby marched along in her denim jeans and graphic t-shirt searching for the answer. She hopped across the chalk-strewn sidewalk and sat criss-cross applesauce in the grass. A juice box accompanied her and her favorite friends at the playground. They weren’t visible to anyone else, but they were real.

She was welcomed into a mossy encampment encrusted with glimmering pearls. They glinted above granular hills of sand which she grazed with her hand, scooping a pearl up for herself and slipping it into her back pocket.

The golden flow of apple juice collected in Ruby’s mouth like the school of fish traveling alongside her. They dipped in and out of the sweet illustrious visions of Ruby’s mind. Ruby danced in puddles of fancy as a rain shower blessed the aquatic creatures. The puddles dove a bit deeper, revealing a mystic realm of enchantment below. Ruby’s fishy friends blew her bubbles and sent her swimming kisses as she floated on in a lovely state of contentment. She was welcomed into a mossy encampment encrusted with glimmering pearls. They glinted above granular hills of sand which she grazed with her hand, scooping a pearl up for herself and slipping it into her back pocket.

No one could strip Ruby of her fantasies, because they meant the world to her. She was invincible to any outside force attempting to discourage her from this intrinsic path of reverie. With her tiny fingers pinched on the edges of her peanut butter and jelly sandwich, she took a ravenous bite. A little lady bug accompanied her in the grass for a moment. Ruby recognized the pop of red in an instant, like the strawberry jam gushing out from her uncrustable. The insect flew away with the breeze and then, AH HA!

A row of ants curled around the spectacle in amazement. She stooped down low to where they mingled and soon became level with the colony. Her juice box now laid towering in front of her, dribbling drops of the rich luscious drink.

Ruby recognized that maybe all of life and the universe interweaving in this manner provided some insight into her deep inquiries. She sat in gratitude at the revelation that she had the opportunity to cross paths with a life form that was so much smaller than herself. She made it her duty to protect every ant hill unveiling itself from indentations on the street. Oh how Ruby wished she could shrink to the size of an ant and see for herself what it was like to live in harmony with others of her kind.

A juicy glob of strawberry jam fell onto the sidewalk where she now stood. A row of ants curled around the spectacle in amazement. She stooped down low to where they mingled and soon became level with the colony. Her juice box now laid towering in front of her, dribbling drops of the rich luscious drink. She tilted her head upward in wonder as the other ants gathered around her in multitudes. The specs so tiny to the human eye spawned indefinitely and carried Ruby off into their home, for she was now their queen.

Lunch time was over, but Ruby dreamt on in a haze, separating herself from the mass of other kids who treated her like an outcast. Only she was not the crazy one. She aligned herself closer with the world around her in each and every moment. She felt the breeze and let her mind flow in tandem with each gust of wind. In the event that she tripped and scraped her knee on the concrete beneath her, she shot back up and soared higher than ever before. She became the bird flying beyond the horizons above her. The clouds were her cotton balls, pressing up against her with soft, healing intent. She opened her eyes and the scrape was gone.

Even more strange, she dug her hand back into her back pocket and grasped the smooth precious stone she preserved for herself earlier. Ruby held the power to weave between different worlds creating an entirely new realm for herself.

Even more strange, she dug her hand back into her back pocket and grasped the smooth precious stone she preserved for herself earlier. Ruby held the power to weave between different worlds creating an entirely new realm for herself. She was everything around her all at once. The tree and the spore growing on its side were all the same to Ruby. She accepted them all and wished to shape a world as perfect as the shiny pressed pearl she contained in the safety of her pocket.

The pearl shone brighter than any other specimen Ruby had ever laid her eyes on. It contained the power of the world and all of it rested within Ruby’s palms, but she was equipped and ready to harmonize. She acted in accordance with nature, supporting all that lived around her, harnessing her power through the wondrous pearl that first bore existence within the depths of her powerful mind.

She looked back at those kids who deemed her weird and eccentric. Ruby held a deep intuitive sense to spread kindness and love to others. Holding her pearl up high in the air, she extended this warm radiance to all. The slight drizzle of rain and gloom turned to a dazzling scene of luminous delight. Nobody could comprehend the sheer beauty, but Ruby didn’t need them to. She experienced sugar-coated day dreams of bliss and would not halt her deep inner musings for interactions that forced her to conform. She could be anywhere with anyone at any time within her mind. Out of all of these possibilities, she chose to be unapologetically herself, and oh, how sweet it was to dream.
